Welcome to 4th grade Social Studies, "Texas Style". My name is Patty Kunkel and I teach at Comanche Elementary School. This is my 29th year to teach. I taught 3rd grade for 20 years and then moved up to 4th grade to teach Social Studies these last 9. I taught one year in a combined 2nd-3rd classroom at Morgan ISD and then moved to Comanche in 1979 where I started teaching 3rd grade. I enjoy working with 3rd grade and 4th grade students very much. My interests include decorating my new home which my husband built and watching my 2 sons in their academic, musical, and athletic activities. These keep us very busy!!
Social Studies in 4th grade is mainly about the great state of Texas. We work on learning about the land and various regions of the state and then progress to the Indians that lived in those areas of the state. The rich history is carried throughout the year in reading, research, hands-on activities, as well as special projects the children create and put together. Each year the students exhibit a great deal of enthusiasm learning about the history, places of interest, heroes, symbols, and many interesting facts about Texas. This makes this subject such a rewarding one to teach.
My goal is to try to give the children a strong background of the state of Texas which they can build on in future history classes.
