The Mission of AVID
To ensure that ALL students and most especially the least served students who are in the middle
WILL succeed in rigorous curriculum
WILL complete a rigorous college prepatory path
WILL enter mainstream activities of the school
WILL increase their enrollment in four-year colleges
WILL become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society
AVID's systemic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase schoolwide/districtwide learning and performance.
AVID at CHS is made up of a District Director/Campus Coordinator, and Elective Teacher which happens to be all the same person in this high school of 350 students. To help accomplish the goals of AVID is a Site Team composed of AP Teachers, Regular Ed. teachers,Vocationa teachers, ELL teachers, administrator, counselor, parents, and community members. The site team assists in the writing of a plan, providing input, modeling strategies, and assisting in analyzing data. Site team members as well as othe faculty members travel to the Summer Institute for a week of learning AVID strategies.
Students are recruited for the AVID class each spring. Potential AVID students are considered by some of the following criteria: TAKS scores, grades, behavior, attendance, college potential, desire and determination, family support, historical under-representation in four-year colleges, economic situation, and other special circumstances. Students in the middle academically are targeted. This helps those students with the potential to be in a course of rigor gain the support needed to be successful in those classes. Each student must be enrolled in a course of rigor which is usually an Avanced Placement Class or an Honors class.
Parent meetings are scheduled for students to explain the AVID program and to inform the parents about the student contract.
As for the students, a week in the AVID classroom looks like this: Monday and Wednesday-AVID Curriculum which includes College Readiness:Working With Sources, College and Careers, Preparing for College, Strategies For Success, Writing Curriculum, Oran Language/Public Speaking, Note-taking practice, test preparation, Research, and WICR(Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Reading) activities. Tuesday and Thursday are Tutorials which include: Collaborative study groups, problem solving, note-taking, higher-level thinking questions, WICR strategies, and reflection and evaluation. Friday:Motivational and Enrichment Activities which include: speakers, field trips, philosophical chairs/socratic seminars, team building, media center/career center, and other motivational activities that support AVID goals.
These are just a few of the many facets of AVID which provides school districts with a wealth of opportunity for the student who most needs some type of support to have the success and courage to rise to the next level.
